Compos?
...competitions!
Compos are the heart of the event. We will be holding competitions on every aspect of scene related creativity.
Here you can find details about the various competitions that will take place during the event.
general rules
obey the rules
- Compo entries must not have been released before.
- If there are less than three entries for a compo, the given compo will either be cancelled or combined with another compo. Participating groups or people will be informed before the merging.
- We accept e-mail submissions for the compos. Interested groups or individuals contact the organizers for more information.
- Racism, Child pornography and illegal contect is prohibited. Submissions will be disqualified respectively.
- We reserve the right to skip long and boring parts in demos during the competitions, such as long boring optimus compatible scrollers (especially when featuring toing toing effect TM) and forever lasting bouncing pixels.
- All shown entries will be spread. Party realease packs will be formed right after the party. Please contact us for on case discussion.
- Rules MAY change! Please don't forget to visit this page for the updated ones.
Combined Demo compo
d is for demo
The demo compo is without doubt the culmination of a demoparty, where groups or individuals compete for the best real-time demonstration.
This year we will accept demos for even more platforms as long as it runs on a turing-complete computing machinery with graphics capabilities! So go wild and write demos for anything you see fit, from lowly handheld consoles to massively parallel supercomputers, as long as you bring the necessary hardware with you :)
We will provide compo-machines for the following more or less standard platforms: GNU/Linux (32bit x86), MS Windows, Gameboy Advance, and GP2X. Contact us for anything else.
Rules
- For all demos, unless otherwise noted in platform-specific rules, the entry must be submitted in a zipped archive on windows (that means rar/7z/arj/lha will NOT be accepted), or as a gzip or bzip2 compressed tar archive on UNIX (not cpio/tar.Z). The final compressed filesize of the archive must NOT exceed 15mb. And whoever submits a tarbomb (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarbomb#Tarbombs) will win a free kick in the nuts (plus disqualification if we're in a mean mood).
- PC demos must be able to run on the provided compo machine. The compo machine will be equiped with a relatively new graphics card, which will certainly provide pixel shaders 3.0 capabilities (at least Geforce 6x00 or Radeon Xx00). The latest drivers will be installed a day before the compo, and all standard libraries will be available: * on GNU/Linux you can count on: OpenGL, freeglut, freetype, SDL 1.2, SDL_ttf, SDL_mixer, libpng, jpeglib, Cg/CgGL libraries, ogg/vorbis libraries and mikmod. * on Windows you can expect: Visual C++ 6/7/.NET runtimes, Direct3D9 with D3DX libraries, OpenGL, GLUT, and Cg/CgGL/CgD3D libraries. GNU/Linux demos must use the X window system. So demos using fbdev, svgalib, directfb or any other such hacks will not be accepted. All PC demos must be able to run from a simple user account, without any administration/root priviledges (yes that applies to windows demos too).
- Gameboy Advance demos should fit on a 8mb flash catridge, and should be able to run directly on GBA bootup without any loader support (this means you have to provide a nintendo-compatible header on the binary).
- GP2X demos should be able to run from the "games" menu by providing a .gpe binary or launcher script. The demo must exec /usr/gp2x/gp2xmenu on exit to return to the menu. It is advisable to statically link any libraries you use, or be sure to carry them with your binary and set LD_LIBRARY_PATH appropriately from a launch script.
- For any other platform contact us and we will discuss reasonable rules.
combined intro compo
i is for intro
Have you ever experienced spontaneous human combustion while coding? Then
this is THE compo for you!
Burn your last remaining brain cells, code a picobyte intro and be the man of the
show.
Rules
The rules are pretty simple here:
- Your executable file must be less than or equal to 65536 bytes. Use of external, non standar libraries (within reason) are also added to the file size.
- The intro must be able to run on the compo machine, see the demo compo rules for details on the compo machine.
- This compo is actually a "combined intro competition". This means that we accept any kind of intros, such as 64k, 4k, 1k and 265b. So in order to do justice to the smaller intros, the file size and the traditional intro category, will be displayed on the big screen prior to the screening.
- For 64k and 4k intros on windows, executable dropping is not allowed, the
entry must include the final PE file which will be counted towards the filesize,
not a 16bit COM file that generates the PE.
Executable packers however, as well as tricks to stuff code/data in unused parts of the PE file (or the ELF file for GNU/Linux entries) are allowed.
streaming music
M is for music
- Every track will be listened for 3:30 minutes, although it can be longer.
- After the end of the compo a mix of 45 seconds from every entry will be available for download, in order to make it easier for you to vote.
- Only one track per artist is allowed.
- Maximum file size is 10mb.
- Allowed file formats are MP3 and OGG Vorbis.
- Every tune should contain the name of the author and the name of the tune. This info must be included within an ID3 tag for the MP3 format, or as comments in the case of the OGG Vorbis format.
- For MP3 tunes, the bitrate must be at least 192kbps static. Entries which are not 192kbps or are in variable bitrate will be disqualified.
- For OGG Vorbis tunes, the bitrate must be at least 192kbps with quality setting at 6. Any lower bitrate will not be accepted.
- Files encoded in MP3 Pro file format will not be accepted.
- The tunes will be played using the latest version of WinAmp.
tracked music
t is for tracker
The "Old School" music compo.
Musicians competing on their skills on the fine art of tracking.
Rules
- Every track will be listened for 3:30 minutes, although it can be longer.
- After the end of the compo a mix of 45 seconds from every entry will be available for download, in order to make it easier for you to vote.
- Only one track per artist is allowed.
- Maximum file size is 1024 kb (1MB).
- Allowed file formats are: MOD, IT, XM, S3M and MT2.
- The samples in each tune must not be compressed.
- Each musician can use as many tracks as he wants.
- The tunes will be played using the latest version of ModPlug Tracker and the patterns will be shown at the big screen while the track is played.
Hand Drawn Graphics Compo
H is for hand
Can you draw?
Then this compo is for you! Measure your manhood (or femininity) by drawing a
kickass piece of ditigal art.
Rules
- The submitted images must be in one of the following file formats: png, tiff, jpeg. Any other file format will not be accepted. The image that will be shown during the compo, i.e. the unsigned one (see below for file submission details) must be in 800x600 true color (24/32bpp).
- Only one image per artist is allowed.
- The picture must be "hand drawn" and not containing rendered nor scanned parts.
- At least 4 stages of the unfinished picture must be included in the submitted archive file (outline, coloring etc).
- The pictures should be submitted in an archive (tar/zip/rar).
The filenames must follow a strict naming convention as to avoid confiusion.
This convention is best illustrated by this example of an image named Hydra,
drawn by the artist Hercules, using the png file format (for allowed file
formats see above):
Hercules_hydra_final.png (final stage, signed)
Hydra_unsigned.png (final unsigned)
hydra_01.png - hydra_04.png (4 intermediate stages)
hydra_outline.png (just the outline)
3D rendered graphics compo
R is for ray
If you're an expert modeller, or you can setup an awesome 3D scene with the best of them, don't wait any longer, grab the 3D program of your choice, be it lowly or mighty, be it MAX or Maya, Renderman or MentalRay, Radiance or POV-Ray, and get ready to compete in 3 dimensions!
Rules
- The submitted images must be in one of the following file formats: png, tiff, jpeg. Any other file format will not be accepted.
- The image that will be shown during the compo, i.e. the unsigned one (see below for file submission details) must be in 800x600 true color (24/32bpp).
- Only one image per artist is allowed.
- The picture must be entirely computer generated; modifications made after the rendering by hand or any other program will get the picture disqualified.
- The models that are going to be used within your scenes should not be taken from Poser or any website/library, but made by the artist.
- At least 4 screenshots of the process of making the image must be
submitted, showing the viewports of the program you are using, or any other
part you think may support the authenticity of your entry best, and a
screenshot of the final picture in wireframe from within the 3D program.
In case you use something like pov-ray instead of an interactive graphical program, you must submit 4 stages of the "evolution" of the scene description file. - The pictures/scene files should be submitted in an archive (tar/zip/rar).
The filenames must follow a strict naming convention as to avoid confiusion.
This convention is best illustrated by this example of a 3D rendering named
Dragon, created by the artist Smaug in 3D Studio MAX, and saved in the png
file format (for allowed file formats see above):
smaug_dragon_final.png (the final rendering signed by the artist)
dragon_unsigned.png (the final rendering unsigned)
dragon.max (the 3dsmax scene file)
dragon_01.png - dragon_04.png (4 intermediate stages)
dragon_wire.png (screen capture of the wireframe scene within the 3d program)
wild demo compo
w is for wild
Traditionally the most "relaxed" compo.
Everything is allowed and acceptable here. From "unconventional" demos that
you deem inapropriate for the democompo, to 3D animations, or even video
recorded with your hand-held camera. Everything goes, no size limit or time
limit is imposed.
In case your contribution is very large (in file size) you should probably
bring it on a CD, in which case, on the label of the CD, you must write the
name of the entry, followed by the author's name and a remark stating that the
CD is for the Wild compo.
